Partnership Walk 2007 - Los Angeles Mayor Villaraigosa Leads the March to End Poverty
Walking to Change the World...
"There is a world ready to awaken; a world with millions of men, women and children willing and able to learn, and to work their hardest to improve their futures. Our task is to provide them with the tools they need to get started, and to support them -- intellectually and financially -- as they work their way along the path to significant, sustainable achievements." - His Highness the Aga Khan
My family and I have joined AKF to help raise funds to help people in developing countries to improve the quality of life by providing access to medical services, education and adequate housing. If you would like to join us in making a positive change in the lives of many people in the developing world, please sponsor us with your contribution and/or participate in the Partnership Walk. Each dollar raised helps to attract additional funds in the form of matching grants from donor agencies. What we raise may be multiplied several times before it reaches program beneficiaries. Partnership Walks are organized by volunteers and all event costs are underwritten by the Foundation which means that 100% of the funds raised go to AKF sponsored programs.
What can a few hundred dollars accomplish in developing countries? As an example, the Bangladesh Rural Advancement Committee (BRAC), an AKF grantee, can educate a child for one year for just $20. BRAC provides education to over 1.2 million students (70% of them are girls). With a contribution of $20 from 5 people would raise $300 (multiply by 3 times due to matching grants) which would be enough to educate 15 children for one year.
Partnership Walk is an initiative of the Aga Khan Foundation akdn.org in over 23 cities and the theme this year is "A Better World is Within Walking Distance" The Foundation sponsors programs that help people in the following areas:
- Improving access to education
- Enhancing the quality of healthcare
- Increasing Women's Earning Power
- Increase resources to promote positive change
Allah says in the Holy Quran:
"The parable of those who spend their property in the way of Allah is as the parable of a grain growing seven ears, a hundred grains in every ear; and Allah multiplies for whom He pleases; and Allah is the Bestower, the Knowing" 2:261
