This Persian calligraphy invokes prayers that are dedicated to our Prophet
Muhammed and Hazrat Ali. I think it reads: "O Allah Give your blessings
to our Prophet Muhammed and his great disciple Ali. (The Salwaat) Purify
our hearts and souls, bless us all, and group us with your virtuous children"

Dear Nina, TURBULENT TIMES: We are entering a phase where materialsm-be-all is faltering. The high expectations that materialism will solve all life's problem, has unfortunately failed us and added more to anxiety. We need to turn to balanced attitude towards life-material and spiritual. We need to guard vigilantly our tradition and ensure that it is for good of ourselves and generation:these Muslim-Ismaili principles will be upheld at all times. The ideals of botherhood, charity, fellowship, regular prayers, helping those in need and redering volutary services, upholding family values and consideration for others:THESE CAN GIVE MEANING TO LIFE AND EXISTENCE.

I fully agree with views expressed by H.E.MOHAMED below. We have
all forgotten our temporary time and nature on this earth. Even BILL GATES
OF MICROSOFT is going to do die someday! HE IS NOT GOING
TO TAKE HIS 50 BILLION WITH HIM! Man's desires and greed are like an
endless pit, it will never be fullfilled. Balanced life or the Middle
Way is the best way to live.

Dear Nina,TODAY'S ECONOMIC UNCERTAINTIES:Most of the lands have moved to free-market capitalism. It is global phenomenon. And what we have?More needy people in the world than before. The moral bottom has dropped out of our culture. Eachone for himself. It is painfully evident that world's political, economic, and social systems do not have permanent remedies for today's immense problem and uncertainties. The wisdom lies for most us to live within our means; to do away things we don't need and save for the rainy days. Just tighten the belts, until situation remedies itself. To live frugally is not to live miserly;but wisely.Don't put all eggs in one basket. And whatever happened to our extended family system?(space!)

Dear Nina: SHARIA LAWS:LATELY WE HEAR OF SHARIA LAWS:(The gist-space!) By 9th century there were established in the Sunnite world the four schools of law, which exist to the present day-Hanafi,Maliki, Shafite and Hanbalite. They assiduously cultivated the various branches of Muslim theology and law.The first school to take define form eas Hanifite, founded by Abu Hanifa(d.767), who left behind him a definite system. He used few traditions and preferred to go back to Quran, extracted from it reasoning and ruling which fitted his ideas.(2)Malik ibn Anas, the founder of Malikite School, used traditions much more generally(3)The third school founded by ash-Shafii(d.820)n who laid great stress on traditions.(4)Hanbalite school was founded by the scholars of Ahamed ibn Hanbal after his death in 885.All four came to be accepted by all existing schools. It applies to all spheres of life, ethical, social.,theologicallegal and Quran only source for Muslim Faith and conduct.(No further comments:Just for information of browers).

Dear Nina:POLITICAL DIVISION AND SCHISM IN ISLAM:To evry student of
history of religion the caption must cause surprise, if not pain; to every
Islamist devoted to to the Founder of his Faith it must cause sorrow and
shame. Alas! that the religion of humanity and universal brotherhood should
not have escaped the curse of internecine strife and discord; that the
Faith which was to bring peace and rest to distracted world should itself
be torn to pieces by angry passions and the lust for power.Nothing evinces
the extraordinary genius of the Arabian Teacher of his call to religious
unity and universal citizenship, in spite of internal dynatic wars, warring
tribes and clans, each withs blood-feud of centuries.

Dear Nina:ADAPTABILITY OF ISMAILIS: Ismailism has survived because
it has always been fluid.Rigidity is contrary to our whole way of life
and outlook.Like Ismailis, other Muslims are seen to adapt to the ways of
life of countiries of their domicile:like Western countries. In Muslim countries, like,Syria,Egypt,
Iraq and Iran,Ismailis easily acquire the customs of these countries, its
outlook and rythm. In Africa the pattern was European-African.To retain
Asiatic outlook in matter of language, habits and clothing would have been
a retrogade step.In Pakistan and India,Bengal, they assume diffrent pattern
of culture-in language, attire, customs and social habits are modelled accordingly. So
long they retain their Faith, brotherhood of Islam will unite all people
of varying social outlook and patterns of behavior and keep them together
in spirit.

Dear Nina:ISMAILI ORGANIZATIONS:PAR EXCELLENCE:We answered about Ismailis
visavis Islam(Your excellent verses inc.).There is one facet of Ismailism, which
all have missed. Ismaili community under leadership of Imam, are organized,
which is easily envy of other communities world-wide.Imam at the helm and
many SOCIAL,RELIGIOUS AND CULTURAL agencies flourish on VOLUNTEERY basis, are
phenomena worthy to behold.Starting with Imam,Ismaili World Council,Continential
councils,Provincial councils and town councils-- are eatablshed to cater
for and oversee Ismailis' social, religious and cultural activities.FEW
examples:Communications/Publication/cultural;Social Welfare; youth-sports;Entertainment;Human
resources;Housing;Settlement comminttee;catering-Transport; Economic Board;
Education Board;Health Board;Religious Education;Technical Resources;Parents
Association.Being highly organised they turn their attention to human relationship
and building a happy society.

"ISMAILIS" Ismailis, sect of SHIITE Muslims, most important from the
10th to 12th century. The Ismailis emerged from a dispute in 765 over the
succession of Jafar al-Sadiq, whom Shiite (ISMAILIS)acknowledged as the
sixth imam (spiritual successor to the Prophet Muhammad). The Ismailis
recognized Ismail, the eldest son of Jafar, as his legitimate successor. On
Ismail's death they acknowledged his son Muhammad as the seventh and the
last imam, whose return on judgment Day they await. The ismailis accept
only 7 imams, rather then the 12 who are recognized by other Shiites. The
two main branches of Ismailis today are the bohras, with headquarters in
Bombay, India, and the Khojas, concentrated in Gujarat state, India. Another
subsect, headed by the Aga Khan, has followers in Pakistan, India, Iran,
Yemen, and East Africa. Encarta 98 Desk Encyclopedia.

Dear Nina:INSTITUTION OF MARRIAGE IN ISLAM: Received numerous e-mails
on this subject. It should be realized that the Islamic view of of marriage--and
all that relates to it,divorce, plurality of wives and so on-- is a question
solely of contract, of consent and of definite and mutually accepted responsibilities.
The sacramental concept of marriage is not Islam's; therefore no religious
significance, and no religious ceremony to invest it with the solemnity
and the symolism which appertain to marriage in, like Christianity and
Hinduism. It is entirely civil and secular marriage in registery office
or before a judge. Prayers can be offered for happiness, prosperity and
good health-but there can be no religious ritual beyond these.

Dear Nina: This is my second time on your guest book and let me tell
you this....it has evolved alot since then....mostly for the better. Could
not help but notice some "questions" being asked by our brothers in faith.
Regarding MR. Zuber....from Pakistan. I am a Pakistani Ismaili Muslim who
migrated to Canada. I think Mr. H.E. Mohammed from Calgary has done every
possible effort to answer the essence of our question. If you look at it
and understand his answers - and I mean really understand his answers,
all the other "petty" questions will be answered. Mr. Mohammed has taken
the core question from all your querries and replied in one simple form.
Open your mind and understand it. BTW have you tried to learn about "your
religion" as much as you want to learn about our tiraqah....and notice
I have used the word Tariqah, as it is for the fact. We all are Practicing
Muslims and simply our Tariqahs are different. If you look at The word
religion....it is reaching God wheather you reach HIM through any Wasila.
You as a human being are an Ashraf ul MakhluQaat....try to be Ashraf. Regarding
Mr. Iqbal Please read the above for guidance. And may Allah give you both
enough strength to expand your minds beyond the physical aspects of religion.
And As NINA has mentioned. A much more intellectual dialogue can be engaged
if you come through proper door. This is a Guest book if you have not noticed
and not a Chat room.! My best wishes and prayers for you both and May Allah
grant you wisdom. Hanif.

to have become a forum for useless discussion. I wish the people cluttering
up your site would do it some place else so that the rest of us can enjoy
it again!

Ya ali Madad. With regard to "Prayers" in a human being's life, I hereby
wish to express my views. Prayer is a necessity in one's life. One can
physically perform prayers or spiritually. One can perform prayers once,
twice, three times, etc. but that is not acceptable unless one "Cleans
his/her Soul first". One hurts somebody's feelings, one is dishonest, does
not care for his/her parents, performs bad deeds, etc, and that person
performs his/her prayers, goes to temple, church, mosque or any other place
of worship, to pray. Is his/her prayer acceptable? No. I am sure all the
religions teach us, that first of all do good deeds, have love for Allah,
Lord, Bhagwan or Ishwer, then your prayers will be acceptable. Our Beloved
Late Sultan Muhammed Shah had also told us that first of all have a clean
heart and love Allah, then your prayers will be acceptable. Even in Hinduism
religion it teaches that, "Cleaning away your sins by bathing in the Holy
Waters of Ganges is not enough, first of all one should clean his/her soul".
One should read "Sayings of Prophet Muhammed (pbuh)", what Allah likes
and what He dislikes. There is no harim in getting knowledge by asking
questions, and those questions should be respected. Our upcoming generation
will have very difficult questions, which they will hesitate to ask, when
we should be prepared to answer them. Our Beloved Hazar Imam is also being
interviewed on many occasions, with questions that he always has answers
for. As Hazar Imam has always told us that we should have lot of knowledge
of our "Mazab", so that we are ready to answer questions. But the most
important thing in life is "not to criticise anyone's religion, we should
respect each other's religions. Khudahafiz.

Dear Nina:MUSLIM PRAYER: You are right that a Muslim prays 24 hours
a day.Let us examine what Holy Book says re:Value of prayer as the means
of moral elevation and the purification of the heart:It has been clearly
set forth In Quran:xxix.45- "Rehearse that which hath been revealed unto
thee of the Book, and be CONSTANT at prayer, for prayer presreveth from
crimes and from that which is blameable; and remembering of God is surely
a most sacred duty." The formulae, consecrated by Prophet with his example
and practice, whilst sparing, the Islamic world the evils of contests regarding
liturgies, leave to the individual worshiper the amplest scope for the
most heartfelt outpouring of devotion and humility before the Almight Presence.

Why do you restrict prayer to 5 times a day. Mowlana Hazar Imam (salwaat)
asks us to pray 24 hours a day, at every moment to perform dhikr. In fact
it is only the Ismailis that wake up at 4 a.m. and perform the morning
dhikr which Prophet Muhammad (s.a.s.) used to perform and that is why the
chapter 73 of the Quran,
Muzzammil was revealed.

Ya Ali Madad I am belongs to sect of Ahal-i-shia I want to ask some
question for those who are interested in religion knowledge. specially
for Ismaille. Q1. Why Prince Agha Khan didn't perform any Haj still ? Q2.
If Prince is really successor of our HOly Hajrat Imam Ali (a-s) then wh
didn't he perform pray five times. While Moula Ali (a-s) didn't leave any
pray in his life. Q3. If prince Karim Agha Khan is really succesor of our
Holy Prophet then why has he not shadow because when our holy prophet went
to in battle then our holy prophet Muhammad (p.b.u.h) hadn't any shadow.
Q3. Why did he forbid for prayer that ismaille don't perform five times
prayer while in Quran Allah says that we haven't given any power to our
prophets that they could change his religion.

(Some users of my guestbook) have not had the courtesy of providing
an email address but you want all your questions answered... doesn't make
you a good, practicing Muslim) and Zubir, you have a lot of questions and
have used my guestbook for this purpose, which is not an appropriate medium.
This is not a chat forum or a newsgroup! I have limited space on my server
and I have to take time off from my busy schedule to remove these files
so that they don't overrun my alloted capacity on the server.
I'd like to quote from the Quran: "Our Religion to us and to you yours"!
We are not obligated to answer to anyone's questions, however, if you come
through the right door, as Allah says in the Quran, then we can have a
meaningful dialog. Allah says: La ikraha fi-d Din (let there be no compulsion
in Religion) and He says: Explain your Religion in the most beautiful manner.
I invite you to email me at amana@hal-pc.org

is made. Wassalam!

Ya Ali Madad/Asaalam Aliyukum. My brother Zubir of Pakistan, I refer
to your comment with regard to our next Imam. You state that our Hazar
Imam has said that his daughter would be the next Imam. As far as I am
aware, he never stated that in his BBC Interview on July 17, 1997. If you
go into Heritage Society, click 1997, click BBC Interview in 11 July 1997,
which states, His Highness The Aga Khan's Radio Interview with BBC London
- Aiglemont, July 17th 1997 (By John Tidmarsh), as follows: JT (Question)
"Ultimately, your turn will come to choose a successor, you have a daughter
and 2 sons, could it be a daughter?" AK (Answer) "You know traditionally,
historically it's been a man, the Imam keeps that choice to himself". Brother
Zubir, our Hazar Imam has not mentioned here, that his daughter would be
the next Imam! May Allah Bless you. Khudahafiz

Imam is used in the Koran to mean leader, guide, model,or sing. These
basic connotations are preserved in the four distinctive usages of later
Islam. (1) The Sunnites use imam as a title for caliphs, the successors
of Muslim community. One of the caliph's functions was to lead the community
in Friday prayers. (2) A local group of Muslims may appoint an imam to
lead them in the Friday prayers. Any Muslim of undisputed piety and sound
knowledge of the Islamic faith and ritual can serve in the capacity.(3)
For Shiites, only a person from the clan of the Prophet can be the imam,
for some of them only a descendant from Ali, the son-in-law of muhammad.(4)
Imam is also an honoray title give to a few of the most outstanding Muslim
scholar of all centuries, such as al-Ghazali.

Dear Nina:FREEDOM OF ISMAILI GIRLS AND THE METHOD OF PRAYER:(I think
Mr. Madhani is right that we are cluttering the Website:but I am humbled
to reply the challenging question).Does the questioner know the free social
anD intellectual part played in the life of Arabia by Imam Hussain's daughetr,SAKINA,
and by the daughter of Talha and great grand daughters of Khalifa Abu Bakar
can be contrasted with position of women in 19th century? The high standard
of MUSIC and ART had been attained in Mecca and Medina as early as the
Khilafat of early Omaiyyad and compare with disdain we look upon them today1!Would
the questioner point out the AYAT of Quran to show the method of prayer?

if my questions hit your feelings, sorry but i just wanted to ask some
simple question because like down below my message there is ismaili boy
wanted to get married with a ismaili girl and ismaili girl wanted that
too. so that explains that the teaching that are be given to you are wrong
because you give girls more power than islam give them sorry to say . i
am very very sorry to say that thing. and why do you pray only one time
a day yes i know there is morning pray but no body goes there , second
why don't you allow another people from another communities to come to
pray in your jammait khana , i think you also feel these thing that what
you do'ot allow to come for pray. because if people come from outside they
will put question about the way you pray and everything else.

Dear Nina: VARIOUS QUESTIONS:IMAM AND ISMAILIS: Prophet of Islam married
many time to propogate Islam. His deputation was just starting and Islam
was coming into being. Conversely all the Muslims then and now are converts
to the Faith of Islam.Talk of modernization:Look at Muslim countries like
Turkey,Egypt and many more where women work side by side with men.Islam
as evidenced in Quran is a natural religion. If one believes just few established
traditons, does not absolve him from not following the rest of Quran. In
Muslim Uma which encirles the world,we have different nations, communities
with established traditions. They still cling to them; but they are good
Muslims.Tell me who is a good Muslim?Could you define one?

Dear Nina, VARIOUS PRACTICES OF SHIA ISMAILI MUSLIMS: We accept that
the Prophet Mohammad was the final messanger of God, the Absolute, as Koran
declared. After death of prophet,it remained for the Faithful to interpret
the Koran, the examples and the sayings of the Prophet, not only to understand
Islam, but to ensure the development throughout the centuries. Fortunately
the Koran has itself made this task easy, for it contains a number of verses
which declare that Allah Speaks to man in allegory and parables. Thus Koran
leaves the door open for all kinds of possibilities of interpretation so
that no one interpreter can accuse another of being not Muslim.

dear brothers/sisters. thanx below for these questions and comments.
everybody have such questions. i wish to add to these questions also. Q1.
why your women dress in your jamati khanna with very expensive clothes
and jewels, like fashion parades. as i know from the quran, one has to
wear simple clothes.Q2. why your imams and family marry christians and
then convert to muslims and not marry ismailis, i understand from my ismaili
friends imam is spiritual father and cannot marry spiritual daughters but
then all ismailis are spiritual brothers and sisters, then they cannot
marry each other! Q3 does the brides marrying your imams practice islam
as true muslims even after divorcing???????? Q4 do these brides drink alcohol,
smoke cigars behave morally??????

Dear Nina:ISMAILIS ARE NOT OUT TO DECRY ISLAM:There is one divergence
of streams of thought. The Kalama or profession of faith is"There is no
God but God and Mohammed is the Apostle of God." To this Shia add:"And
Ali, the companion of Mohammed, is the Vicar of God." Etymologically the
word "Shia" means either stream or a section. In Ismailis "Living Imam"
is the "Spiritual Guide"; who must be obeyed and who dwells among those
whom he commands spiritual obedience.Ismailis don't believe in "hidden
Imam".
