This Persian calligraphy invokes prayers that are dedicated to our Prophet
Muhammed and Hazrat Ali. I think it reads: "O Allah Give your blessings
to our Prophet Muhammed and his great disciple Ali. (The Salwaat) Purify
our hearts and souls, bless us all, and group us with your virtuous children"

A little boy wanted $100.00 very badly and his mother told him to pray
to God for it. He prayed and prayed for two weeks, but nothing turned up.
Then he decided perhaps he should write God a letter requesting the $100.00.
When the postal authorities received the letter addressed to God, they
opened it up and decided to send it to the President. The President was
so impressed, touched and amused that he instructed his secretary to send
the little boy a check for $5.00. He thought that this would appear to
be a lot of money to a little boy. The little boy was delighted with the
$5.00 and sat down to write a thank-you letter to God, which ran as follows:
Dear God: Thank you very much for the money. I noticed that you had to
send it through Washington. As usual, they deducted $95.00 for themselves.

Dear Nina: A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ISMAILI ALAM:For the New Year-Setting
realistic goals, taking realistic chances, challenging yourself in new endeavours
and taking risks is good start to feeling as though you are the "master
of your game." Being master of your game also means going through periods
of SELF-REFLECTION or SELF-AUDIT where you examine your life upto that
point and think about making adjustments for the future.Everybody goes
through self-analysis. It is almost like an identity crisis where we "TURN
INWARD AND REFLECT INWARD ABOUT WHAT WE WANT IN LIFE."During the period
we evaluate our relationship with family and friends, think about work
and career and even assess their contribution to SOCIETY.The beauty is
to start with small things in life and work up tackling the bigger problems. What
we need above all THE POSITIVE ATTITUDE.

Dear Nina:PHILOSOPHY OF GOOD LIFE:IS IT? There has ,however, been a
revolt of which we feel the full force today, which is really a revolt
alike against the authority of Religion, and against the whole idealist
tradition, and which had its origin mainly in the influence of philosopher
Jean Jacques Rousseau. This what we may call the philosophy of emotionalism,
or self-expression. Rosseau revolted against all moral standards and conventions
and all type of intellectual and religious authority. He believed in the
fundamental goodness of unsophisticated man if he were only left to express
his natural feelings without external restraint.A man is not born with
ready made soul or self. He is born with bundle of emotions, passions and
will. We need to develope these instincts and bringing them under unified
control; otherwise they will result in chaoes.

Great informative site. Saddam Hussein should have been mauled and
killed for bringing this about and putting the Iraqis through this nonsense.
Unfortunately, in our part of the world, Middle East almost inclusively,
the biggest stick being wield around is terror. Of course, the other issue
is that the life of one's oponent is not worth a drat! Or at least that
is how it is in my country, Iran. May you have a worthy fast during this
month.

Dear Nina:MAULANA ROOMI-THE GREAT MYSTIC POET: Roomi was a great scholar
of philosophy and theology. It was at the suggestion of his disciple Husam-ud-Din
that he wrote his celebrated work:the MASNAVI. This book contains greatest
mystic poems known to the world. It stands very high for its lyrical beauty
and is acclaimed to be the greatest Masnavi by both the scholars of the
East and the West. Pro. E.G.Browne pays eloquent tribute to Roomi and says...."his
mystical Masnavi deserves to rank amongst the great poems of all time."Roomi
tells us that the greatest virtue is "Ishq" or love, which helps purification
of soul and in attaining the union with Supreme Being.Religious formalities
and prayers are good, but the dwelling of the Beloved is not in the mosque, temple
or church. As our Pir said in Ginan:"Man mera musalla,Allah mera kazi...(my
heart is my praying mat and Allah is my judge.)

Dear Nina:(with your permission):CELEBRATING HOLIDAYS: According to
the tradition of the country, we celebrate chrismas and New year's eve
with calm ceritude. The holidays don't have to be expensive, meaningless,
or filled with stress. Rather, thay can be occasions to connect with ourselves
, one another, and nature, to express creativity, to laugh, eat and make
little merriment together after sundown. This is the month of RAMADAN,
ninth month is traditional Islamic lunar calender.Significance of fasting
is to gain self-control and self-restraint. It is a month of self-discipline.
It makes us concious of the generosity of Allah." Whatever we do, during
these holidays,WE NEED TO RESPECT THE WISHES OF OUR BROTHERS-IN- FAITH
BY AVOIDING ANY DEEDS OF EXUBERANCE.

Dear Nina:THE IRAQ visa-vis THE CITIZENS OF THIS COUNTRY: It is natural
where our sympathies lie as to being our brother-in-faith; but also as
citizens of this country, we also carry a duty of loyalty to the country
of our domicile. I shall not enter into merits or demerits of the the present
dilemma with Iraq. But I would revert to Islamic philosophy in time of
national calamity. Mulsims have differing opinions as to pros and cons
of the attck on Iraq; but one thing I believe that we also accept the events
unfolding as per our belief:"Submission to Will of God".This is not a fatalistic, deterministic
attitude or pessimism; but acceptance of all events unfolding as "God's
Will", despite all human endeavour of free will.

Dear Nina:IMAM'S GUIDANCE:OPTIMISM IS THE NAME OF THE GAME: To be alive
is to be vital, energetic, vibrant, joyous, ehtusiastic, eagerly interested
in evrything. It is to rise above PAINS, DIFFICULTIES, SORROWS and live
with strength and patience. You should be alive within all your active good
qualities and manners. HAZY wishes float in mind like white clouds in the
summer morning slowly above green fields. But WHITE CLOUDS do not do green
fields any good. The rain makes the crops grow is brought by DARK CLOUDS.
No wish however audible ever does a man any good unless he sets to work
to fulfill it. There is certain pleasure in good desire only by setting
to work and changing them into facts and realities.EVERYONE of us views
life and play his or her part according to his individual belief and moral
code.Circumstances have nothing to do with with values of life, as way
of life a man leads creates the circumstances.

Dear Nina:DEVELOPMENT OF ISMAILISM: I would say that your contributor
has erred in reference that Hazarat Ismail's son the 8th Imam was the last
and would be awaited on Judgement Day. ISMAILI CONCEPT OF "LIVING iMAM"
AND UNBROEK CHAIN IS THE MAIN FOUNDATION OF ISMAILISM.After the death of
Imam Jafar Sadiq in 148 A.H.-765 A>D> hearalded Ismailis' political and
religious Da'wa in the distant countries of Sind,Yemen and North Africa(then
called Maghrib). In North Africa two missionaries, al-HULWANI and ABU-SUFIYAN
cultivated Da'wa. In Yemen,IBN HAWAHAB, an Ismaili Missionary, was able
to establish an imndpendent Fatimid state in 289 A.H.-901 A.D. When al-Hulwani
and ABU SUFIYAN died, IBN HAWSHAB sent ABU ABDULLA AL-SHII,who was working
with him in Yemen. ABU ABDULLAH FINALLY SUCCEEDED IN RELLAYING THE BERBER
tribes agaimnst the BANI AGHALAB rulers of MAGHRIB,whom he overthrew in
various skirmishes lasting 292-296 A.H. -903-908 A.D. He then proclaimed
Hazrat Imam Muhammad al-Mahdi, a descedant of Hazart Imam Ismail, son of
Jafar Sadiq, as the first FATIMID CALIPH.

Ya Ali MADAD Khushiali Mubarak . Ismailis, sect of Shiite Muslims,
most important from the 10th to the 12th century. The Ismailis emerged
from a dispute in 765 over the succession of Jafar al-Sadiq, whom Shiites
acknowledged as the sixth imam (spiritual successor to the Prophet Muhammad).
The Ismailis recognized Ismail, the eldest son of Jafar, as his legitimate
successor. On Ismail's death, they acknowledged his son Muhammad as the
seventh and last imam, whose return on Judgment Day they await. The Ismailis
accept only 7 imams, rather than the 12 who are recognized by other Shiites.
The two main branches of Ismailis today are the Bohras, with headquarters
in Bombay, India, and the Khojas, concentrated in Gujarât State,
India. Another subsect, headed by the Aga Khan, has followers in Pakistan,
India, Iran, Yemen, and East Africa. Encarta® 98 Desk Encyclopedia

Dear Nina:DESTRUCTION RELIGIOUS PLACES OF OTHER FAITHS: The is also
the misconception in certain quarters that Islam justifies the destruction
of religious places of the followers of other faiths; this is not in accordance
with the Quranic teaching. In fact, in Sura ALHAJJ., the Quran deplores
such acts:"Had not God checked one set of people by means of another, monasteries,
churches, synogogues and mosques, where the name of God is oft commemorated,
would assuredly have been pulled down."(22:41) In fact Omar, the Second
Caliph, took special care to preserve the sanctity of the religions of
the follower of other faiths. This is borne out by many instances, the
most famous being his treatment of Jews and Chritians on the capture of
thre Holy City of Jerusalem in 637.

Dear Nina:WHAT Dr.MOHAMED IQBAL(1873-1938),HAD TO SAY ABOUT ISLAM:The
poet-philosopher of Islam, justified the claim of the present generation
of Muslim librals to re-interpret Islam in the altered conditions of social
life.He goes further, with his profound knowledge that life is a process
of progressive creation necessitates that each generation, guided but unhampered
by the work of their predecessors, should be permitted to solve their own
problems.(2)ALLAMA IQBAL, whose love for Islam was second to none, declared:
"A community which is inspired by feelings of ill-will towards other communities
is low and ignoble. I entertain the highest respect for the customs, laws,
religious and social institutions of other communities."

Dear Nina:(May I!) IMAMAT'S BIRTH DAY 13th DECEMBER,1998.-who said-Entire
Ismaili Alam is celebrating. We all know significance of IMAMAT DAY and
its true observance. It is a day of self dedication and self introspection
to all Ismailis. We need to search our hearts and solemnly resolve with
true faith and devotion that we shall correct our past errors and with
implicit obedience to the Firmans of Mowlana Hazar Imam, devote ourselves
to the service of our beloved Spiritual Lord. All our achievements have
been made possible due to far sighted and wise leadership of our Spiritual
Lord not only in spiritual matters but even in worldly matters.LET US from
innermost corner of our grateful hearts offer our sincere prayers that
our beloved Imam-e-Zaman PRINCE KARIM AGA KHAN graciously be pleased to
bestow on us his loving BLESSINGS AND GUIDANCE for many years to come-Amen.Allah!"Mohammad

Dear Nina:DUALITY OF FAITH: Europe uncritically accepted the duality
of spirit and matter probably from Manichean thought. It best thinkers
are realising this initial mistake today but its statesmen are indirectly
forcing the world to accept it as an unquestionable dogma. It is, then,
this mistaken separation of spiritual and temporal which has largely influenced
European religious and political thought and has resulted practically in
the total exclusion of Christianity from the life of European states. The
result is a set of mutually ill-adjusted states dominated by interests
not human but national. (2) In Islam the theologians too began to give
a bewildering variety of comments on Quranic texts and even Hadith or Traditions
of the Prophet were concocted, religious decrees, promulgated and FATWAS(judgements)
given to suit the whims and caprices of a particular Muslim ruler.Rumi
reminded Muslims: "YOU WERE SENT TO UNITE PEOPLE-YOU WERE NOT SENT TO DIVIDE
PEOPLE".
