This Persian calligraphy invokes prayers that are dedicated to our Prophet Muhammed and Hazrat Ali. I think it reads: "O Allah Give your blessings to our Prophet Muhammed and his great disciple Ali. (The Salwaat) Purify our hearts and souls, bless us all, and group us with your virtuous children"

Dear Nina:THE NEW GENERATION: As the baby boom sinks into the middle-age spread, the generatiomn so accustomed to throwing its weight around is losing some of its clout. It's been given for four decades that the demographic bulge of the post-war surge in birth rates would shape the face of North American society. From rock music and blue jeans of our youth to the minivans of maturity, they defined our culture. By virtue of their sheer numbers, they swept aside the traditions of their parents' generations as they careened through free-love and mindless liberalism. As they raised the families of their own, they mandated what their parents could not- we imposed our values, our tastes, our fashions on our children. Boomers dictated the movies that would be watched, the books that would be read, the clothes that would be worn. Our status symbols became, by default, the status quo. What they didn't endorse was relegated to the fringes. Economic success meant catering to boomers' tastes--entire industries rose and fell on our collective whims.

Dear Nina:TODAY WE ARE CELEBRATING GHADIRE KHUM:The Day when Prophet of Islam declared Hazarat Ali as "He is Mawla of those whose Mawla I am.Hazarat Ali, the son-in-law of the Prophet Muhammad was our first Imam and greatest hero of Islam.Besides being a great warrior,he was also a great saint, dedicated himself to the service of Islam, during the life time of the Prophet and his own life time. He was also a great orator. His speeches and sermons rank high in importance. The collection of these, known as "Nehjul Balagha" was complied by the great scholar WSayyid Razi. The first collection was the work of Abu Usman Umar bin Bahar Alijahiz Albasri who died in A.H.255.It is called "Mait-i-Kalima".The second collection known as "Nasrul Loali"by Sayyid Imam Ziauddin. The third known as "Ghurarul Hikam wa Darrarul Kilam" by Abdul Wahid. This contains several thousand maxims.

Dear Nina: SINGING GINAN IN GLORY OF ALLAH AND IMAM: I once had to stay in a strange town for few days and so in the evening I went to Jamatkahana. The congragation was very small; but what astounded me was the beauty of singing of Ginans. Then I made friend of one who had sung so melodiously and asked him if he ever felt disheartened singing to such small congragation. He replied, "No. You see, we sing to the glory of Allah and Imam, and not to congragation". Perhaps this is why that few singers sang so beautifully. Now wouldn't our lives be more beautiful, too, if whatever we do is always done for the love of Allah and Imam.Say to renew friendship or do a voluntary work.

Dear Nina:THE EXOTERIC EXPERIENCE OF NAVROZ *********************** Sayyid Shamsi relates his quest for the Master which led to his meeting with Hazrat Imam Shah Khalilullah (a.s.) and the fulfillment of his intense yearning in stanzas one, (two three and seven-LACK OF SPACE) which will be explained in this section: "Eji Navroz na din sohamna, Shah Ali Qayam shikaar ramwa vann gaya, Sevak na mann thaya oodassi, Praan Ali charne rahiya...............(1) On a beautifuI day of Navroz, Imam-e-Zaman had gone to the woods to hunt. His murid became sad (for missing his Master) as his soul was longing to be at the feet of the Imam (an expression of respect and obedience for the Imam.) Navroz is a Persian word meaning 'new year's day '(twenty-first March). This is the first day of spring, hence the day is beautiful (sohamna). `Shah Ali Qayam refers to Imam-e-Zaman because Noor-e-Imama is everpresent. Sevak is one who is ready to serve or obey. In this case a disciple or a murid Praan means inner life or `soul'.

Dear Nina: NAURUZ IS UPON US.We Shias celebrate Nauruz with great pomp. The tradition started in Iran,as thanks-giving for bounty of Allah.Ismailis celebrate it in various ways.Besiedes being the beginning of spring, it is joyous occasion to rededicate ourselves to renewal of life after ardous journey through love and labor and be thankful for Allah's bountiness. But March in this country is a fickle month. It promises Spring, but often gives us a spell of cold and blustery weather. A friend was feeling Winter-weary and asked his woman friend to fectch him a bottle of sunshine! If only she could have--now, what a wonderful tonic that would be. So many things come in tubes and packets these days, yet we are still at the mercy of the elements. On reflection, I decided that this was not bad thing.Surely we appreciate Spring for more when it finally arrives, than if it were immediately to hand. A bottle of sunshine would be delightful, but, perhaps, that we all really need is a packet of patience!.

Dear Nina: THE NEW TREND IN LOVING YOUR PARENTS:All cultures laud:"Honour Thy Parents". Even Prophet of Islam said:"Paradise lies at the feet of your mother".But recently in Canada many Canadian pareents living in poverty have successfully sued their children for support and they have succeeded. Apperantly in Canada there is 200 year-old British common law. I understand there are many such cases before the court.Few parents pay regard to what their children say.Old-fashioned respect is fast dying down between them

YAA ALI MADAD & EID MUBARAK TO ALL ISDMAILIS BBC MONITORING INTERNATIONAL REPORTS: TAJIK PREMIER RECEIVES AGA KHAN'S SON BBC Monitoring Service - United Kingdom ; 13-Mar-2000 12:00:00 am ; 168 words Text of report by Tajik radio on 13th March Prime Minister Oqil Oqilov of Tajikistan received the head of the Aga Khan Foundation, Prince Amin Aga Khan [son of Karim Aga Khan IV, leader of the world Ismailis], today. During the talks, they mostly touched upon and exchanged views on issues of mutually beneficial cooperation with this foundation in Tajikistan. The prime minister said that the agreements are being implemented which were signed during Prince Karim Al Husayni's official visit to Tajikistan. Certainly, our listeners know well that during the official visit of Prince Karim Al Husayni Aga Khan IV to Tajikistan in 1995, an agreement was signed to open a cultural centre and an international university [in Tajikistan]. The foundation allocated money for this purpose. At present, a decision has been taken to open the cultural centre and the international university for use. Further cooperation issues were also discussed during the meeting. We recall that the coordinator of the Aga Khan Fund in Tajikistan and a deputy prime minister, Qozidavlat Qoimdodov, also had talks with Prince Amin. Dear Nina:TEN-YEAR ISMAILI BOY RECITED EID NAMAZ: Today in Calgary, amidst congragation of more than 500 people at Headquarters Khane,a young ismaili boy of 10, recited perfect Eid Namaz., It proves how Ismaili Muslims take their faith seriously. I remember an incident that happened in South Africa, when our Ismaili Missionary gave a religious talk in Masjid, with audiance of 2000 Muslims. During question period a man stood up to ask if Ismailis say their Namaz. After our Missionary explaining how Ismaili Muslims say their Namaz, asked the questioner wether he says his Namaz regularly and if so to come up at the stage and say it. He answered back that he did not know the Namaz. Then the missionary asked an Ismaili boy of 7 years to say the Namaz(Dua). He said perfectly and Mullah who was present lauded the community for their religious pursuit.

Dear Nina:PEARLS OF WISDOM:(1) It is a kind of happiness to know to what extent we may be unhappy.(2)Ever one blames his neighbor what the world blames in himself.(3)Fortunate people never correct themselves. They always fancy they are in the right as long as fortune supports their ill conduct.(4) Good taste springs more from judgement than from intellect.(5)We should not judge of a man's merit by his good qualities, but by the use he can make of them(6)When our hatred is too keen, it places us beneath those who hate.(6)Why this lifting of the brow in depreciation of the present--this pathos in reference to the past?

Dear Nina: CHILDREN'S RULES FOR ADULTS: When a third grade student in a religious education class complained that there were so many rules for children but none for grown-ups, the teacher reponded by asking the classs to write down their own rules for adults. Accordingly most pupils were concerned about gooliness, peace, fairness, honesty, and truthfulness. ONE CHILD'S list read:(1), Do not be unfair. (2) Do not scold so much.(3)Give us time(4)Do not always disturb us.(5)Do not laugh at us.(6) Do not force us.(7)Admit that we are right once in a while.(8) Do not make your own rules.(9)Get along with one another(10) Go to Jamatkhana yourselves, and do not just send children.

Dear Nina: GLOOMY BABY BOOMERS: Did you notice this term:Baby Boomers, is loosely used world over. Every aspect of life seems geared to cater for their life style."Baby Boomers" is the term coined to describe people born between the end of the the second world war and the beginning of the 1960s. During that period many countries on the winning side of the war reported a marked population increase. A survey showed that baby boomers, once carefree and optimistic about the future, now "feel insecure about themselves and their children, and regard their old age with something like dread." Why the gloom? "They are now confronted with a world which they feel has gone too far in terms of individualism, materialism and lack of self-control and good manners.

Dear Nina: HUMAN FREEDOM AND DIGNITY:FROM DIFFERENT SOURCES: We are all born with an inherent need and desire for dignity and freedom..Kofi Annan,UN Secretary-general, echoed feelings that are universal when he asked:" Who can deny that we all seek lives free of fear, torture and discrimination? When have you heard a free voice demand an end to freedom? When have you heard a slave argue for slavery?" Dismissing the notion that some are born to be slaves, first-century Roman philosopher Seneca, in his letters to "Lucillius" wrote:"Please reflect that the man you call your slave was born of the same seed, has the same good sky above him, breathes as you do, lives as you do, dies as you do. HAZART ALI, revered as the first Imam and as fourth caliph after Muhammad, said that all men are "equals in creation." S'ADI, a thirteenth century Persian poet declared:"The children of Adam are limbs of one another and their creation come from one substance. When the world gives pain to one member, the other members find no rest."

Part I: Tawassul - Supplicating Allah through an Intermediary. The Ahle-e-Muhammad (Panjtan Pak or Ahle Bayt), from the time of the Prophet to this day, have been the means of approach in our prayers and invocations of Allah. We regard them only as very pious people and the nearest ones to Allah. Therefore, we consider them a means of our approach to Allah. There is no disagreement among scholars(sunni & shias) that supplicating Allah through an intermediary is, in principle, legally valid; the discussion of it's details merely concerns derived rulings that involve inter-school differences, unrelated to questions of belief or unbelief, monotheism or associating partners with Allah (shirk). ALL Muslims agreed on this point from the time of the Prophet (pbuh&hf) up to the present day, except Wahabis, who contradict all Muslims with their new creed - condemned as kufr by traditional Islam, yet, they (the Wahabis/Najdis/Salafis)) are leaders of today’s Sunni Islam. If, tawassul is "shirk" then from from the evidence available it seems that The Prophet (pbuh&hf) taught muslims to commit "shirk" and, so did the Sunni Khalifa Uthman ibn Affan and, so on.
Abdul Malick <Abdulmalick123@hotmail.com>

Part II: The Holy Quran supports intermediary for approaching toward Allah where it states: "O' you who believe! Be mindful (of your duties) to Allah, and seek the means of approaching toward Him." (Quran 5:35) When we make Tawassul, it means that we seek the Mercy of Allah by resorting to a connection who was more obedient toward Allah and, as a result, Allah answers his/her prayers faster than us. "Who can intercede with Him except the cases that He permits?" (Quran 2:255). "They (i.e., prophets and Imams) do not say anything until He orders, and they act (in all things) by His command. He knows what is before them and what is behind them and they (i.e., those saints) offer no intercession except for anyone whom Allah accepts, and they…….. are in awe and reverence of His (glory)." (Quran 21:27-28) The Shia Isna Asharis publications: Zadu'l-Ma'ad by Allama Majlisi and Hidayatu'z-Za'irin by Sheikh Abbas Qummi - read the Du'a-e-Tawassul (invocation of seeking nearness), and you’ll find that the Prophet's family (Ahle Bayt) was part of the invocation. Everywhere they were mentioned as means of approach to Allah. Finally, to recite an excerpt from our D’ua: O Allah, forgive us our sins, and give us our bread, and have mercy upon us, in the name of Thy closest Messengers and Thy holy Imams, and in the name of our Lord and our Imam, Shah Karim al-Hussayni. Ameen!

Dear Nina:SHARP BRAINS BELONG TO THOSE OVER 60: If you meet these people from different stations of life, you will be amazed at the zest of life they have.Do we realise that many sharp brains in our country belong to artists, writers, actors, and others who are over 60? It makes us to conclude that all happy elderly people whether active, creative or "shut in", still have a goal, a dream, amd an ambition in life, and are still working in their own way to make it come true and make their wise contributions to community and nations. It is wise, whatever our age, to know what we want from life and where we are going- then to strive for it with all our might.Keep counting Mawla's blessings.

Dear Nina: AN ARAB LADY OF OLDEN DAYS: Personal beauty, noble descent, bright intelligence, cultivated taste and forceful character: these were the virtues prized most by Arab ladies of olden days. And an embodiment of these qualities was Ayesha, daughter of Talha and grand-daughter of the Caliph Abu Bakr. Ayesha was the prettiest and proudest woman of her time. She would never use the veil. Her husband Musab protested. She replied," On me Allah has set the seal of beauty and I rejoice when my beauty is seen and the mercy of Allah is therein acknowledged." Never shall I cover my face, for no flaw or fault finds a place in Allah's work. Musab went to war. Ayesha anxiously awaited his arrival. When he returned, Ayesha went out of her house to welcome him, and congratulating him, busied herself in wiping the dust of his face and coat-of-mail. Musab said, "I was afraid lest the smell of the rusty iron coat-of-mail and of the weapons be offensive to you." Ayesha replied, " By Allah, this smell is sweeter and lovelier to me than that of the musk."

Dear Nina:MOTHER'S WORTH:(a mother can look after nine children; but nine children cannot look after one mother!): If you were to add up the salaries for all the jobs that a mother performs throughout the year, how much would her services be worth? According to a report in The Washington Post, she would receive $508,700 a year! This figure is based on a study of median salaries for occupation that mothers typically perform. These are some of the 17 occupations included in the report, along with their average annual salary: Child-care worker,$13,000; bus driver,$32,000; Psychologist, $29,000; animal caretaker,$17,000; Registered Nurse,$35,000; Executive Chef, $40,000; and General Office Clerk, $19,000.According to one CEO of financial services company that conducted the study, these figures do not take into account such expenses as Social Security and other retirement benefits.

He also said, "Ali is with the truth and the truth is with him," and "Ali is with the Qur'an and the [knowledge of the] Qur'an is with him," and "I fought for the sake of the revelation of the Qur'an while Ali will fight for [safeguarding] its interpretation, and he is the one who will explain to my nation whatever they differ about after me," and "Nobody pays my dues except Ali, and he is the wali of every believer after me," and "Ali to me is like Aaron was to Moses," and "Ali is of me and I am of him, and he is the gate of my knowledge."[96]

Part I: All Praise is due to Allah, the Lord of the Worlds, for having guided those whom He has chosen from His servants. If the Holy Qur'an, which contains no contradictions, and which no falsehood can approach from before it or from behind, needs someone to explain it, the Sunnah is in a greater need than the Holy Qur'an for someone to explain it due to the abundance of its contradictions which resulted from all the insinuations and lies that crept into it. Such a need is quite natural, even a rational necessity, that each Messenger should look after the Message with which he is sent, so he appoints someone to succeed him in doing so. Such an appointment of a successor and care-taker is done only through divine revelation so that the Message may not die when he dies; it is for this reason that each and every prophet had a successor. It is to meet such a pressing need that the Messenger of Allah appointed his vizier and successor over his nation to be Ali ibn Abu Talib whom he raised since his childhood to be adorned with the conduct of prophethood. Continued in Part II….

The Ismaili community is one COOL Muslim community. I wish I was born Ismaili. I started an email list that some of you might be interested in: Desirelationships is a mailing-list for South Asians who are involved in, or who desire to be involved in, inter-religious, inter-racial, inter-class, inter-caste and inter-national relationships. It's open to those that are seeking, dating and as well as those who are married. Non-South Asians who are dating or married to South Asians are also welcome. The purpose of the list is to support those that are involved in relationships that are taboo (e.g. hindu-muslim marriage). Those of us that are involved in such relationships often are faced with the challenge of breaking the news to our parents and receiving their support. This mailing list is a space where we can discuss our difficulties, support each other and find creative solutions to the challenge of breaking down barriers that cause heartbreak. To subscribe, send an email to desirelationships-subscribe@onelist.com. (Don't need to write anything in the body of the message). Ya-Ali Madad desiladki1@hotmail.com

Dear Nina:MEASURE OF SUCCESS IS NOT IN HOW MUCH YOU HAVE:BUT HOW MUCH YOU CAN GIVE: Money, sympthy, love, friendship, happiness and fellow-feelings: ONE of the many peoples of Papua New Guinea are the Trobriand Islanders. Their group of islands is small, lying about a hundred miles south-east of New Guinea, but their yardstick for measuring wealth, success and social standing is admirable. They measure wealth and success not by how much they have, but by how much they are able to give away to others. I understand that visitors to the Trobriand Islands describe them as "Paradise" and I am not surprised, when the spirit of giving is so prevalent. And as the poet H.W.Longfellow once commented: "Give what you have. To someone it may be better than you dare to think."

It amazes me that the claim of relevance of Ashtar Command to George Van Tassel's transmissions from Ashtar. The original, authentic Ashtar (through Van Tassel) was an authority, rather than one to ramble on of metaphysical philosophy. The idea of love is one to be recognized, but there is much more requirment for knowledge. The focus of Ashtar Command is narrow minded, and only presents persons to be blank, or brainwashed. Spiritaulity & Science are one, I do not see them working together in this organization.

Dear Nina:PESSIMISM AND OPTIMISM: Despite technological progress, there are areas of life where many a step, frustrations and disappointments dominate our lives. Although with our religious attitude we can philosophise ills of life; but in reality we have to face the situation.I remember a story of two frongs. One was PESSIMIST and the othetr OPTIMIST. They fell in a big bowl of cream. The Pessimist dialogued with himself and finally reached to a conclusion that there was no escape from this bowl of cream. He didn't make any efforts or even tried to get out. Finally he sank into it. But the OPTIMIST didn't give up hope. He tied the ways of getting out. In this process he kept on whirling around the cream. Finally the cream turned into butter. He got on it and jumped out.
