FOR CRUSADES-900 YEARS AFTER CHRISTIAN WARRIER SACKED JERUSALEM:The slaughter
was terrible blood of the conquered ran down the streets, until men splashed
in blood as they rode.At nightfall,'sobbing for excess of joy?,the crusaders
came to the Sepulchre from their treading of the winepress, and put their
blood-stained hands together in prayer."--THIS WAS FIRST CRUSADE:(1096-99).It
resulted in capture of Jerusalem and establishment of four Latin States
in thre East:the Kingdom of Jerusalem, the County of Edessa, the Principality
of Antioch and the County of Tripoli.THE SECOND CRUSADE(1147-49) was initiated
because of loss of County of Edessa to Syrian Muslims in 1144; it ended
when Muslims successfully turned back Christendom's "infidels."THE THIRD
CRUSADE(1182-92), understaken after Muslims retook Jeruselam, had one of
its leaders Richard I "the Lionhearted," of England. It soon disintegrated
through attrition, quarrleing, and lack of cooperation.

Contd.... CRUSADES:(PART-II) THE FOURTH CRUSADE(1202-4) was diveretd
for lack of funds from Egypt to Constantinapole; material assisatance was
promised in return for helping enthrone ALEXIUS, an exiled Byzantine pretender
to the crown. "The resulting pillage of Constantinapole by the Crusaders
is something that the Orthodox East(Chritians) has never forgotten of foregiven.""If
any single date is to be cited for the firm establishment of the schism,
the most appropriate- at any rate from psychological standpoint- is the
year 1204."THE CHILDREN CRUSADE(1212):brought death to thoudsands of German
and French children before they even reached their destination.THE FIFTH
CRUSADE(1217-21):The last under Papal control, failed because of flawed
leadership and clergy interfereence. THE SIXTH CRUSADE(1228-29) was led
by Emperor Frederick II of Hohenstaufenm whem Pope Gregory IX had previously
excommunicated. THE SEVENTH AND EIGHTH CRUSADES(1248-54 and 1270-72) were
led by Louis IX of France but collapsed after his death in North Africa.

I have been reading about the travels of Ibn Battuta. The travels and
observations of this extremely intelligent representative ofIslamic culture
seem to have been ignored by the world in general both muslim and non muslim.
It seems such a pity that the exploits of this man who travlled more miles
around the muslim world than any other over a 30 year period remain relatively
unknown even now 650 years later.

HE CONQUERED HIS PRIDE: 1587 A.D. Sheikh Ishaq Kaku,a renouned saint
of Lahore, was one day accosted on th road by a rough man who asked him
to carry to his house a heavy load of rice. Without a word the saint took
it on his head, passed through the market place and went to the man's house.
People took the man to task, but the saint said,"Do not blame him; I am
rather grateful to him that through him Allah has given me occasion to
wash my heart clean from the guile of pride." Love is to give salaam to
those who have hurt you because of their successes.

AKBAR: A TOLERANT MONARCH: At the city of Benares Raja Man Singh built
a beautiful temple at a huge cost. The principal idol in this temple had
its head a tiara enriched with jewels worth about three lacs of Ashrafis.
On this subject Prince Jahangir asked his father why he had not interfered
with the erection of such haunts of idolatry.Aknar's reply was: "My child,
I find myself a powerful monarch and claim to be the shadow of Allah on
earth. I have observed that Allah bestow the blessing of His gracious providence
upon all His creatures without distinction. If should I dischrage the duties
of my exalted station, were I to withhold my compassion and indulgence
from any of those entrusted to my charge. With all the humasn race, with
all Allah's creatures, I am at peace. Why should I then permit myself to
be the cuase of molestation of aggression to any one?"

Dear Nina(Historical):OTTOMAN EMPIRE AND BALCANS: At the zenith of
their prowess,in the 15th and 16th century, the Janissaaries seemed invincible
to Christian European observers, who saw Albania, Rumania and the Slave
provinces of the Balcans fall to Turkish armies and by 1526,the greater
part of Hungary too.Following the victory, word was received of a revolt
raised against Ottoman suzerainty by their Serbian vassals. Murad I wheeled
to meet the challenge. He first eliminated King of Bulgaria, who had sided
withthe Serbs. Bulgaria was occupied and the issue was then joined with
the Serbs on the plain of Kosovo on 15 June 1389. Again victory went to
Ottomans.Majority of Albanian Muslims are Sunni. However there are also
followers of the Bektashi Sufi order, a tariqa of Shia Branch.Historically
Albanians were tolerant of different religious groups. Religion did not
function as a basis for ethnic differntiation as it did among other Slavs.

Dear Nina:(Historical).WHEN MUSTAFA KAMAL WAS THE GREATEST: The Greek
army had an easy sailing at Smyrna. The Turkish defence was weak and ineffective
and the Greeks practically walked over the city and occupied it. Elated
with joy at this speedy victory, the Greek army marched towards Angora,
looting and burning and killing as they advanced. The very existence of
the entire Turkish race was at stake. A band of patriotic Turks resolved
to resist even unto death. They gathered under the flag unfurled by Mustafa
Kamal Pasha. Halide Edib joined the campaigmn as a soldier when they took
their first stand at Sakaria. Mustafa Kamal's headquarters was accommodated
in a poor house- for the Turks had nothing better at that time to give
to their beloved leader. Halide went to see him there and said:"At that
moment I went toward Mustafa Kamal Pasha with abosolute reverence in my
heart. In that half-built humble Anatolian room he embodied the resolve
of the young to die in order that a nation might live. No palace, no title,
no power will ever make him as great as he was in that room from where
he was to lead the Turks to their final stand against annihilation."

My dear Nina: NAVROZ MUBARAKI TO ALL:(March 21st). It is the first
day of Spring. As in nature, we Ismailis celebrate the renewal of life's
exuberance. The earth is riot of colors. Blood is coursing in the venis
of stones. Heavenly breeze and sky is blue. The birds do not stay in their
nests. And look at the mountain stream, creeping, gushing and rippling,
jumping, swaying and crawling down hill in its way winding over and beneath
the rocks. It pierces mountain's heart.AND THE POET SAYS:"See the Brook's
passage, conveying us life's message! Spring comes not so ofeten;- Pour
me some firey libation, keep nature alive;- Eternity's secret ever holding,
myster's cutain raising! "Eji Navroz na din sohamna, Shah Ali Qayam shikaar

Dear Nina:'THE MEHRALLIS-THE LOST SOULS":DO WE THROW DIRT TO SUN BECAUSE
OF OUR ANGER TO THE HEAT.We know the barking dog seldom bites. But you
don't bark back to make your point. No amount of arguments or websites will
make a man change his mind if he has no mind to change.Man is a wilful
and covetous animal, who makes use of his untellect to satisfy his inclinations,
but who cares nothing for truth, who rebels against personal discipline,
who hates disinterested thought and the idea of self-education. Wisdom
offends him, because it rouses in him disturbance and confusion, and because
he will not see himself as he is.Our loyalty and Faith are enough armour
to defend any Mehrallis.

YA ALI MADAD! Dear brothers and sisters, I have just recently discovered
the website of AKBARALLY MEHERALLY. I was greatly disturbed that something
like this exists when we can put a stop to this somehow or the other. The
Christians whom Meherally also bashes, have responded with their own website
that clarifies what Meherally says. I know that quite a few people bash
our tariqah, but of course this is not my main concern. My main concern
is how this "man" talks about our great and beloved IMAM (SAS)! When I
read the things that Meherally wrote about our IMAM (SAS), tears were brought
to my eyes. This is like someone who speaks ill about my father to my face
and loves it. I could go on and on, but if there is anybody that would
like to do something about Mr. Meherally, please e-mail me because I believe
that this is an intellectual JIHAD! YA ALI MADAD

OH SOLITUDE,WHERE ARE THE CHARMS WHICH SAGES HAVE READ ON THY FACE:
Who knows what true loneliness is--not the conventional mask. The most
miserable outcast hugs some memory of some word, but the open terror? To
the lonely themselves it wears illusion. Now and then a fatal conjuction
of events may lift the veil for an instant. For an instant only. No human
being would bear a steady view of moral solitude without going mad.Maybe
except in MEDITATION.

Dear Nina: A POETIC TREATY: On March 21, 1905, a treaty was signed
between Amir Habibullah Khan and the British Government. As the Amir was
affixing his signature, some ink fell from his pen over the English copy
of the parchment. He exclaimed. "It is spoilt, we must write out other
treaties>" Dane, the British representative, replied,"This is only a mole
on the face of the treaty. Hafiz had truely said," If that beauty of Shiraz
will accept my heart,For her dark mole I will give Samarkand and Bukhara!"
This prompt quotation eased the situation, but Abdul Quddus, Amir's lieutenant,
exclaimed, "See, your Majesty, Mr. Dane gives you Samarkand and Bukhara."
Dane at once replied,"Nay, the mole is on the face of the British treaty
and for this the Amir abandons Bukhara and Samarkand." The treaty has,
therefor, been known as the treaty of the Mole."

THE TRAGEDY OF TWO: Man survives earthquakes, epidemics.the horror
of disease, and all the agonies of the soul, but for all time his most
tormenting tragedy has been, and will be a misundersatnding between two
friends, two lovers and two members of the family.

This is the first time I have visited this site. I teach in mission
class (nightschool) here in south Florida and I have found a wealth on
information that I may use in some of my classes. I just had one simple
question: Are you guys affiliated with the Institute on Ismaili studies
or the tareekah boards, or other such institutions? Please get back to
me and let me know who you are affiliated with and where you get your information
from, and can anyone submit this information? I ask because I want to make
sure that all the information is accurate before I take it into my classes,
and also so that if anyone asks me where I got the info from, I just don't
have to reply by saying "the internet". All I'm trying to determine is
that if you are a reliable source, so don't mind ok? Thanks once again.

Dear Nina:FREEDOM TO MAKE A PACK WITH DEVIL: I keep hearing this name
"Akbaralli Mehralli" as one guest-columnist refers.Although we have freedom
of speech: hence there is room for GOOD AND EVIL.In Bible there a reference
to LUCIFER-WHO MADE PACK WITH DEVIL.In passage in Isaiah, "So that Lucifer
came to be regarded as the name of Satan befor his fall". God said" I beheld
Satan fallen as lightening from the heaven".There are some people of whom
we should never have believed evil unless we had seen it, but there are
none at whom we ought to be surprised when we do see it.Evil depends on
contrast and on conciousness. A barn-door hen is not unhappy, in respect
of its moving capacity, so long as it is not aware of the difference beween
itself and eagle.

The lighter hour):WE VNEER CIVILIZATION by doing unkind things in a
kind way; saying bitter things in a sweet voice; always giving our friends
chloroform when we tear them to pieces.WE FORGET only those whom we have
never loved enough to hate.IF WE had no fault ourselves,we should not take
so much pleasure in remarking them in others. KINDNESS is a reserve of
happiness, allowing us to enjoy the happiness of others when we have lost
our own.Madam,LOVE OF LABOR: Like your Website, when one erects a structure
he/she doesn't care for what idlers may scribble on the scaffolding.Untimely
joke is a eource of bitter regret always. Sometime it may ruin a man; not
becuase it is joke, but because it is untimely.

Dear Nina:THE BANKRUPT CRITICS: Critics are like other people who see
what they look for, not what is actucally before them.It is easier to be
critic than to be correct. Those who write with their pens dipped into acid
could be likened to the idle thinker, who lies softly in a cosy chamber, makes
violent verbal and written attack against a soldier who spends the winter
night on a river's bank, watching in silence under arms for the safeguard
of his community and nation.Idle criticism, uncreative truth, do not grow
greater by additiion of fallacy: the admission of inferior kinds is no
extension of the scope of constructiveness. When a guard hears a dog back,
he immediately gets alerted that something fishy must be in offing ;and
he need to be vigilant.

Dear Nina: IS EVIL NECESSARY IN THE WORLD?VICE v/s VIRTUE:If it did
not exist, the good would not exist. Evil is unique reason for the good's
being. What would courage be far from peril? and what pity without pain?
What would become of devotion and sacrifice if happiness were universal?
It is because of evil and suffering that the earth may be inhabited and
that life is worth living. Do not complain of the devil. He is a great
artist and very learned. Fort every vice that you destroy there was a corresponding
virtue that perished with it.

Dear Nina: OUR IMAM SAID OUR FAITH IS OF "INTELLECT"--Kasir bin Quas
relates: THE INHERITORS OF PROPHETS: One day I was sitting by Hazrat Abu
Darha in the mosque of Damascus when a man came up to him and said," I
have come to you from Medina for a HADIS; for I have heard that you heard
the HADIS from the holy Prophet's lips." Abu Darha asked the man, "But
have you any business to attend to here?" He replied, "Nothing of the kind."
Abu Darha said," I have heard the Apostle of Allah say," He who travels
on the path of acquiring knowledge, for him does Allah smooth the way to
Paradise and all beings in heaven and earth and water pray for Allah's
forgiveness for him. The learned man is superior to the devotees as the
moon is superior to the stars.Learned men are the inheritors of the Prophets."

Dear Nina: MATERIALISM AND IDEALISM:THE WORLD'S TWO FORCES: Materialistic
philosophy maintains that ultimate reality of the universe including life
and mind is matter. Thus to a materialistic the real is material and nothing
exists beyond the sphere of PERCEPTION. In contrast to this is the interpretation
of IDEALISM. According to idealism the world is not material. It is ideal
and its meaning is realised in experience, thought, reason, intelligence,
personality, values, religious and ethical ideals. Thus there are two views
in opposition in as much as that if one is true the other must be false.
Idealism in the real sense begins with PLATO which we see in SUFISM.Plato
maintained the real things in the world are ideas. By ideas he did not
mean ideas in any mind. He meant the real objective things are not material
but ideals. What we call material are simply the sensuous or our sensations
and as such unreal. So the world of sense, in fact is simply phenomenon.
Real things are forms or ideas and therefore having their meanings only
in mind. What we experience as hard, soft, hot, cold, rough, red, white, black,
queer, punjent, sweet, salty, sour are simply names of your sensations which
we call external things.
