This Persian calligraphy invokes prayers that are dedicated to our Prophet Muhammed and Hazrat Ali. I think it reads: "O Allah Give your blessings to our Prophet Muhammed and his great disciple Ali. (The Salwaat) Purify our hearts and souls, bless us all, and group us with your virtuous children"

HAZARAT ALI:OUR FIRST IMAM: On Sunday November 1st we are celebrating Hazrat Ali's Day.Out of his many saying I shall quote just afew. LEARNING: Books are the garden of the learned. The man of learning lives even after his death: the ignorant man is dead, while still alive. The trely learned man is he who understands that what he knows is but little in comparision with what he does not know.KNOWLEDGE: Gain knowledge: it adorns you if you are rich, and feeds you, if poor. EDUCATION: Who never ciorrects himself, will never correct another. INTELLIGENCE: The intelligent man is whoever knows how to be happier today than yesterday.SPEECH: How often one word las let loose a war!How many loves have been born in a single glance! Whoever says what he should not say, hears what he does not want to hear.

AGA KHAN: "Meaning of Aga Khan" by Sakar Datoo in your Web page-"What's New"was to the mark. To Ismailis AGA kHAN stands for a link with Imamat. It evokes the historical memory of Late Imams -to our generation: Sultan Mohammad Shah,Aga Khan"the Grand Old Man of Muslim World", who was leading light of Islamic world and brought Ismaili Muslim Community into 20th century by organising it and by force of his genius and personality. Today our Imam Karim Shah Aga Khan is the bearer of that noble and great name, the leaders of millions of Ismaili-Muslims; a front rank world personality, a finished product of Havard and erudite scholar in his own right. It constitutes a sparkling rivulet of wisdom, drawn from a flowing fount of perennial values. It welled out in thought that breath and that burn and chart the course of destiny of millions of followers.

I agree with Mr. Mohamed..and would like to share a beautiful verse by Gibran that expands on the concept of giving.. Then said a rich man, "Speak to us of Giving. And he answered: You give but little when you give of your possessions. It is when you give of yourself that you truly give. For what are your possessions but things you keep and guard for fear you may need them tomorrow? There are those who give with joy, and that joy is their reward. And there are those who give with pain, and that pain is their baptism. And there are those who give and know not pain in giving, nor do they seek joy, nor give with mindfulness of virtue; They give as in yonder valley the myrtle breathes its fragrance into space. Though the hands of such as these God speaks, and from behind their eyes He smiles upon the earth. It is well to give when asked, but it is better to give unasked, through understanding; And to the open-handed the search for one who shall receive is joy greater than giving..." K. Gibran

GENEROSITY AND GIVING: Whoever is the object of divine beneficence will be solicited on all sides. If he dispenses his gifts according to the will of heaven, his happiness will be lasting; if not,it will be ephemeral.Do not be ashamed to give a little; for to deceive is to give still less. Better part of generosity is speedy giving: Give to poor man before he asks; for if you place him under the necessity of stretching out his hand, you take from him self-respect more than the value of your alms. Put not off until tomorrow the giving to a man of that which he hath need; for you know not what the morrow hath in store for him and you.Men are two kinds: generous men who are not rich, and rich men who give nothing

Ya Ali Madad. Excellent article by Hamida "Food for Thought". We Ismailis are extremely, extremely lucky to have guidance from our Beloved Imams. One comment to add, Our Late Beloved Sultan Mohamed Shah had stated in East Africa that, " not to depend on house servants to do your cooking, washing, etc., my Begum sometimes does the housework herself". These predictions were done 50 years ago. We all see that in this part of the world, we have to do lots of things on our own. Our Traditions and Cultures, are very rich and the upcoming generation should carry on with these. Khudahafiz

Dear Nina:WOULD SOMEBODY DEFINE WHO IS A TRUE MUSLIM? The tapestry of Islamic history is studded with jewels of civilization;these jewels poured forth their light and beauty; great statesmen, great philosophers, great doctors, great astronomers; BUT these individuals, these precious stones were worked into a tapestry, whose dominant theme depics the actholicity of Moslem spirit, the universality of its outlook and practically unlimited capacity of assimilating alien cultures and invigorating them by imparting to them a new meaning. Islam has enlivened, fecundated and vitalised all alien cultures and it has been able to do this because in itself Islam came to affirm the grand tradition of humanity and to rescue it from being paralysed by false accretions that had been introduced into its texture by those who had in utter defiance of the Divine Law.

Dear Nina: ETHICS OF ISLAM-ISMAILISM:The danger of today's scientific civilization lies in the break between the HUMANITIES and the Sciences(or Materialism). If there is cimnplete break between these TWO cultures then there is danger that Scientific civilization will bacome wholly materialistic and this would mean human problems may be treated as purely technical problems. One of the possible causes of hunger and poverty in the world tioday are considered technical rather than human proble. The greatest discoveries will be made along spiritual lines.Someday people will learn that material things themselves do not bring happiness. Then scientists will turn their laboratories to study God and prayer. But we already have Imams's guidance: "material and spiritual life should have balanced entity".Ethics in materialism teaches us to reach the goal of spiritual life.

Of all the subjects that we obsess about and lust after, success is the one we lie about the most. IT IS TIME TO TELL THE TRUTH. People are reaching the top, using all their means to get money, power, fame and glory and then SELF-DESTRUCTING!! Perhaps they never wanted success in the first place or did not like what they saw when they finally achieved it. PERHAPS SUCCESS AND EXCESS ARE SO INEXTRICABLY LINKED THAT TO ACHIEVE ONE IS TO INVITE THE OTHER. !!!!!!!!!!! The prayer of Abu Bakr has finally come true when he asked Allah why Kisra the King of Persia was so rich and also the Roman King whereas the Prophet was poor. ISMAILIS AND DISCPLINE:One thng people will not fail to notice is the discpline in our community. With blessings of Imam, we are well discplined communty.Discipline consists of submission of one's impulses and powers to a regulation which imposes from upon their chaos and bring efficiency and economy where they would otherwise be ineffectivenee and waste. To achieve this greater perfection human being need to be free.Freedom is discipline and discipline is freedom. We cannot achieve one at the expense of the other.Freedom in which we are only free, within the laws of our being.Adults should show they value enthusism, insight, sensitiveness and faith.Freedom means dedication because if our own personal resources are to be released, we must go beyond ourselves in the services of which we can love our concern about ourselves.

ISMAILI- MUSLIMS WORLD WIDE BROTHERHOOD:THE FOCUS:There is nothig new or foreign to our belief in this concept of brotherhood. We are instructed to use our worldly possessions, whatever they may be,to strengthen it. The CHARITY-the main goal of Islamic principles and way of life must be preserved. When calamity befell Uganda Ismaili-Muslims,the whole ideal of chrity came to the fore- we settled well and thrived.Allah need to smile on us.Today our bretheren in other parts of the world are undergoing tribulations through famine, war, natural disasters, sickness and sheer povery. They endure and wait for better days to overcome the hardships and tragedy. We don't need to give up our lofty life styles. We must appreciate what we have and dwell on what we don't have or what is owed to us.We must be grateful when we get up in the morning with all amenities of life at our disposal. This is reality.Shall we share and make them smile as well!

PROGRESS OF ISMAILI WOMEN: A country is like a human body. Men and women are two lungs. If you reduce the power of women, you crush them with inhibitions and imaginary restrictions. The emancipation of women from domestic tie in 19th century led upheavals in every sphere of activity, women have been taking an equal part in upliftment- the country, socially, religiously, at home and economically, and have started working side by side with men.Prophet Muhammad said "men but can follow in the footsteps of their mothers towards paradise;the first convert was a woman".Professionals:doctors, lawyers, journalists, commercial secs.,nurses.Educate a man,you educate one;educate a woman, you educate the whole family. Gatt Imam played a sterling role in life of Ismaili women.

A little too late, but, Congradulations to Imam Aga Khan and the new Begum. I am glad to see "Ismaili Muslims" have a page such as this one, although i stumbled on it accidently, I find that it was most usefull. I would like to take this opportunity, also, to offer VERY affordable, quality legal services to all "Ismaili" and "Muslim" brothers and sisters, without limiting my services to all other ethnic groups. Our legal services cover various fields such as Family, Civil, Criminal all the way to Corporate & Commercial. Please inquire at our E-Mail: tsklegal@on.aibn.com, and I personally will get back to you. Cheers

WESTERNIZATION AND MODERNIZATION: We imitate a foreign culture to contrast its power and technical skill and brilliant surface with the sad misery of the world of Islam; and we begin to believe that there is no way but Western way.We must differentiate between WESTERNIZATIOM and MODERNIZATION -blame Islam for our shortcomings ,especially with intellectuals who adopt an apologetic atttitude.I don't say that Muslims should seclude themselves from influences coming from without.During Renaissance,Europe accepted Arab influence in the matter and method of learning. But it never adopted spirit of Arabian culture. It used Arab influence only as a fertiliser upon its own soil, just as the Arabs had used Hellenistic influences.Science is neither Western nor Easten:it is UNIVERSAL.
